A colorized portrait of actor Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954). He was an American actor of stage, screen and radio as well as a film director, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in ''A Free Soul'' (1931), and remains well known to modern audiences for roles in Frank Capra films ''You Can't Take it With You'' (1938) and ''It's a Wonderful Life'' (1946).
During the 1930s and 1940s, he became stereotyped as a grouchy but sweet elderly man in such films as ''The Mysterious Island'' (1929), ''Grand Hotel'' (1932, with John Barrymore), ''Captains Courageous'' (1937), ''On Borrowed Time'' (1939,) ''Duel in the Sun'' (1946), ''Three Wise Fools'' (1946) and ''Key Largo'' (1948).
